Why prop firms restrict news trading, and what happens if you break the rule
News trading rules protect prop firms from slippage and price gaps. Here is why they exist, how they usually work and what one accidental news trade can cost you.

Almost every CFD prop firm has a rule about trading the news. Some ban it on funded accounts only, some allow it during the challenge but not after, and a few allow it everywhere. The rule is usually one sentence in the terms, but breaking it can cost more than any losing trade.
To trade safely you need to know three things: why the rule exists, how it works on your account and what happens if you break it.
Why the rule exists
When high-impact news lands, the market changes for a few minutes. Liquidity thins out, spreads widen and price can gap straight past a stop loss. In those seconds a trader can make a month of profit or lose far more than they planned to risk.
On a funded account the firm pays out real money for those wins. A profit that comes from a sudden news spike says little about a trader’s skill, so many firms simply remove those minutes from the game.
How news rules usually work
- There is a window around each high-impact release, measured in minutes before and after the release time.
- The window applies to instruments linked to the release currency, not to every pair on your platform.
- Opening or closing a trade inside the window is what counts. Some firms also check pending orders that fill inside it, or trades that are simply held open.
- The rule can be different on the challenge, the verification stage and the funded account.
- Speeches and rate decisions are sometimes treated differently from scheduled data releases.
What a breach can cost you
This is the part that hurts. On most funded accounts, the profit from any trade inside the window is deducted before your payout is calculated. You did the work, you hit your target, and part of your hard-earned profit disappears.
Stricter firms go further and refuse the payout request completely. On some account types a news breach is a hard rule violation, and the account is closed, even after months of consistent trading.
Firms also change these rules from time to time. Always read your firm’s current terms for your exact account type and stage.
The real problem is the accidental trade
Very few traders break a news rule on purpose. The trade that breaks it usually looks like any other trade: a setup forms, you enter, and the release was two minutes away. Following the rule by hand means opening the calendar, converting times and checking your pair before every single entry. Do that fifty times a week and one day you will skip it.
How to stay on the right side of it
Prop Firm News Shield was built for exactly this. You save your prop firm and account type once, and it loads that firm’s news rule. It follows the pair on your chart and counts down to the next restriction right where you trade: on MT5, cTrader, TradingView, your browser or your phone. You see whether it is safe to enter and how long it stays safe, so you can plan the trade instead of finding out afterwards.
